The Morbid The Merrier ~ Halloween

September 2, 2010 1 comment

This is my second purchase from Lysa’s The Morbid The Merrier Etsy shop. Had to take advantage of some new Halloween products also buying a couple of things I’ve been eyeing up.

Like the first order everything came lovingly wrapped up in tissue and ribbons. Was so excited opening them, they were wrapped in bubble wrap to ensure no damage.

Ordered the Halloween Geist Candy Apple Lip Balm. Described as

Crisp tart apple + sticky, slightly spicy, gets-stuck-in-your-teeth candy coating.

Spot on, spicy apple. Never really too keen on lip balms, but this hasn’t left my side all day, have re-applied (not really needed to but just love it) again and again and again. It’s gorgeous. Really soft and moisturising. Got to buy more of this.

Also bought the Halloween Saucy Jack Perfume Oil Well priced at £12, really wasn’t too sure what this would be like described as :

Saucy Jack: Deep, dark, and resinous… redolent of stained and tattered petticoats, damp brick, and spilled blood in a London alleyway….

Had to buy this, love the Victorian era, and proud of London (live less than an hour away) cannot describe what notes this contains, but it’s feminine, and really beautiful. Not too strong, you won’t scare anyone away with a over-powering scent, would like to say it’s slightly flowery. Hmm.. not too sure. Whatever it is I like it.

Dessert Absinthe Solid Perfume costs $4.50 and comes in a roll-on container like a lip balm. lighter than the original absinthe scent TMTM offers. Described as:

Upon opening, the first notes are lemon, sugar, and anise – very reminiscent of a lemon sugar cookie. After wearing it for just a few minutes, however, the bottom notes emerge… woodsy, earthy, mysterious, and alluring.

Not over-powering, smells like a cake to me that needs some cream poured over it, yummy scent. Not a sexy scent like the Saucy Jack one, more of a comforting smell that will be nice in the upcoming winter months.

Natali Solid Perfume is the more subtle of the scents I ordered, smells just like a Terry’s Chocolate Orange. A little faint, but pleased it is, chocolate scents can be a little too much on my skin, so it’s nice to have to sniff my arm rather than have a constant scent bothering me.

Described as:

Natali is a brooding yet comforting blend of sweet, spicy orange and dark, fragrant chocolate with a heart of vanilla and wood.

Overall, loved the Halloween pieces the most, have to buy the other products being offered for limited edition too. This is my fave company after Haus Of Gloi. And in my opinion should be right up there in the top Etsy sellers list. There’s samples in the shop, no doubt you’ll love everything to buy bigger sizes.  A must buy for sure.

Follow Up : Summer Scents By Haus Of Gloi

June 26, 2010 10 comments

This week I received my summer scents sampler pack from Haus Of Gloi, they came in a little box filled with tissue paper and a free sample vial of Moon Dog and little Haus thank you card.

In the pack was four new summer only limited edition scents ($10), labelled and packed tightly so no leaks.

I already had high hopes for these new fragrances, so far have been very impressed with the quality and how long the scents actually last for, along with the unique scents themselves.

The pack contained the following vials:

Lemon cake made with the tang of fresh buttermilk, raspberry coulis – an otherwise innocent cake corrupted by cardamon and deceptive pink peppercorns.

Never been keen on lemon scents, find they end up making you smell like horrid cheap kitchen and bathroom cleaners. HOWEVER, this is a warm just baked lemon cake. Not artificial, and the lemon isn’t a sharp zesty note. And yes can imagine some raspberry coulis running down the side of the cake. A daytime fragrance oil that is really comforting and yummy. This would work well for me in perfume oil, soap and scrub.

Tart cranberry, pink grapefruit, sparkling champagne all shook up crushed with ginger root

Had this on today, which was a gorgeous very hot British humid day. And every so often got a little whiff of this, and loved it, Zazz is sparkling, very fizzy scent, never smelt anything like this before. Little bit of ginger root I can smell. Very summery and fun. In the vial I didn’t like it so much, but on my skin the fizziness becomes the sparkling as referred to. This would work best for me in perfume oil and soap.

Red Roan:

Fresh strawberry flecked porridge with maple syrup and adulterated with a splash of white cognac.

This is probably the least favourite, although saying that I do love it, just not as much as the other three. The strawberry works well with the maple syrup but for me I think I’d prefer this in a lotion rather than oil.

Insalata Nocturna:

In the night garden, green Bolivian lemon, rubbed tomato leaf, olive leaf absolute, black fig syrup and basil.

Before this arrived I was expecting not to like this so much, was expecting it to be herbal and not expecting it to be so fresh. This is why ordering samples works, because now I love this, it is fresh, and totally reminds me of Italy, slight edge of citrus takes me back to Verona and Lake Garda and the outside cafes a few years ago, it’s lighter than expected, and is a scent that would work well day or night. This would well in scrubs, perfume oil and lotion.

Overall, $10 gets you a good amount of perfume oil, some new addictive scents leaving me impressed as ever that I found the Haus.

Latherati ~ Book Inspired Body Products

Found Latherati on Etsy during a random search for unique and different perfumes and soap. Every scent is based on books, every product has a scent description, the inspiration (title and author of book) and a brief description of the book.

I placed my order one week ago and it took one week exactly to get to the UK, I know the package was shipped day after purchase. I also received a convo from the owner to say thanks for the order and my order was being shipped out.

I ordered Wishing roll-on perfume oil, Gloom Soap, and received a free sample of Beguile lip luster.

After opening the package envelope my order looked like this, everything was enclosed in black tissue paper.

Gloom Soap

The soap came in a little cardboard box, with ingredients on a sticker on the side, the box was made to look like a book, clever little idea. When I opened the soap box I could smell the incense along with the floral rose which work well together, Gloom is a very unique scent, it is very strong, but I was expecting that.

Scent description is as follows:

rich vanilla, hints of rose and honey with dusky notes of nag champa incense

Cannot smell any vanilla before using the soap, but during use the vanilla is more prominent and mixes well with the strong incense smell, in fact it kinda takes away the strong incense, overall the scent is very nice, very unique, very nag champa and if you like heady scents you’ll love this, I do so it works well for me.

The soap lathers up quickly and you get a good deal of bubbles, scent lingers after use. Skin felt clean after use, but not particularly moisturised. All soaps are priced at $5 each for a 5 ounce bar. Will buy another soap scent to fully judge if this soap is for me. There is samples called Book Endz for $5 you get 5 soap samples, i will order this next time.

Wishing Roll On Perfume

Each roll on tube consists of 9ml of perfume oil, it rolls on easily with a good amount left on your skin.

Scent description is:

A blend of rich vanilla, spicy cinnamon and a hint of magic.

This is my favourite of the two scents, gorgeous vanilla and the right amount of spice. Slight element of fruit included. The scent does last a good few hours, and is not overpowering at all. But if you like that occasional slight whift of fragrance you get when you move around this is for you. Priced at $5 for 9ml you get a lot of oil for your money. Would recommend this product and will order more.

Beguile Lip Luster

This is amazing, now I don’t like lip balms very often, I hate gloopy balms that leave your lips sticky and far too oily. This however, is just right for me. It’s moisturising and leaves a noticeable soft finish. There isn’t any flavour I can taste, but can smell the scent of:

lavender mint

Leaves a teeny tiny peppermint tingle on my lips, and have no problems re-applying. REALLY recommend this. It’s priced at $3.50 and would be making a order maybe in the “Classic” scent of vanilla almond.

I would buy from Latherati again, would like to try their lotion, read shop feedback and the lotions have got good reviews. Not sure about the soap if honest, will need a few days of trying it to see if it’s moisturising enough for me, but happy to try different scents to test this out. Everything else is brilliant, lovely scents all round, well priced and generous amount of products, fantastic lip balm sample. Great packaging and overall theme for the shop.

EDIT: Sorry about the quality of the pics, will be getting new camera soon 🙂

First Haus Of Gloi Haul

June 16, 2010 7 comments

First found Haus Of Gloi about 5 months ago after watching a few haul videos on You Tube, I was looking for a new brand to get into. Found a few mixed reviews; people seemed to be totally in love with the Haus products, or really not so sure, or felt they weren’t right for them (due to complex scents).

Decided I’d wait, and one day I’d make an order… oh man should have ordered much sooner:  I’ve missed the Spring scent line and a few “reverie” products whilst waiting (pift.)

First of all, I ordered about 6pm one night and about 3 hours later I was sent an email to say my order was being sent out (ALREADY!!!!!!) Within a week it was here. Was bowled over by the super speedy turnaround, and then I got really excited about my order because if customer service is like that then I had high hopes for the products.

I ordered the Honey Tree Emulsifying Scrub 1oz (price $2), Moon Dog Sample Perfume Vial ($2.50) and Picaroon 2oz jar of Lotion ($3.50) and I received a free sample of Vice Soap.

Everything was wrapped well in tissue paper and when I opened it up I could smell chocolate and coconut. I also received a little thank you card.

The Vice sample soap has lasted me three showers. Decided before I even used it I would buy myself some, the scent described is:

Steam billows rolling off a vessel of fresh made Turkish coffee, marshmallow goo tainted by graham cracker crumbs, toasted hazelnuts and blanketed in black chocolate.

Oooh yum, makes me hungry even just looking at that description let alone sniff it!!! The coffee smell is gorgeous, now I love my coffee and I love the smell of fresh coffee but I’m usually put off by coffee beauty scents, either way too overpowering or you end up smelling like you’ve had a cup poured over you and it goes stale. Vice is nothing like that, the chocolate gives the coffee a nice darker note. The soap lathers up easily and my skin hasn’t dryed up after use. (and my skin is prone to drying with most soaps). Vice perfume is definitely on my list of Haus must haves.

Next up, Honey Tree Scrub, have heard so much good stuff about this scent and it certainly seems to be one of the top HoG scents. It is very sweet, a little bit too sweet for me, although it is nice, and I will continue to use this scrub up I wouldn’t be buying it in scrub form again, however I have heard the Honey Tree soap is more musky and that sounds just the right blend for me. So will be buying the soap as I really want to like this. Scent description is:

Right from the bee hive honey, amplified by seductive essence of vanilla, darkened by a passing waft of woody smoke. A beautiful brown splattered with golden mica.

Can smell the honey mainly, but can pick out the notes of smoke and vanilla. I just want a little less honey. The scrub works really well, the sugar is very fine and not a harsh scrub, one of the best scrubs I’ve used in fact, It doesn’t leave you feeling greasy but after you’ve washed off the sugar there is some oils left on your skin, like I say it’s not greasy though. Which is weird right!! The blend of oils just work very well. Skin just feels soft and very moisturised. The 1oz tub gives you lots of showers worth of product, I only use a small half a teaspoon size amount, and it’s more than enough, also it’s nice to try a scent/scrub without buying a huge frigging jar and finding you don’t like the scent or product and then wasting most of it just to get rid of it. For $2 you just can’t go wrong with this.

The sugar is fine and amazingly soft on your skin

Moon Dog perfume next.. this scent is AWESOME. Nope! It’s gorgeous! Nope, It’s delicious. Damn it, it’s all of those things and more. Try it, try it NOW!!! Haus gives you a very generous sample, god knows how many days worth you can get out of this, if you tried it every day for a month I’d say that’ll last that amount of time. I use the scent on my wrists and every so often I can smell it, but it’s in no way over powering to anyone around you, it’s more of a personal scent, you’d want to keep smelling just for yourself. Haus describes this as:

Solar storms erupt: pure cracked coconut, dry sandalwood heated with Indonesian nutmeg and a Singapore clove.

Spicy yes! And complex, and oh so yummy. It’s very sexy, and a very adult scent. Again very nicely priced sample. The vial is labelled- very good if you buy more than one scent.

The scent lasts for most of the day, but you get so much product you’d be re-applying every few hours just to have more to smell. Seriously, it’s THAT good.

Last product is the Picaroon Lotion. The lotion comes in 2oz tubs, 4oz bottles and 6oz jars. The 2oz is well priced, and you really don’t need a lot of product for each application, the lotion sinks into your skin quickly, non greasy (in fact every review I’ve read says the lotion is one of the best non greasy products around) yet the lotion doesn’t disappear it leaves skin soft, and moisturised. I usually have a issue with lotions, I have dry skin on my upper arms, some lotions have made it worse, some moisturise yet still have to keep re-applying product every few hours. Difference with this, I don’t need to re-apply product. First application sorts out my dry issue, leaves my skin nicely scented (scent lingers on skin all day) but I will admit I do re-apply this lotion… Why? Because a) I love the fragrance. and b) I figure it isn’t hurting to put more on. This is the first lotion I’ve used that I don’t have to go wash my hands afterwards.

The scent!

Sun scorched mahogany bough crusted with a crystalline sea spray! Faint plundered rare spices. Lemongrass, coconuts, fine Mexican lime and Haitian bay rum.

Don’t let the sound of lemongrass put you off. It’s blended so well it compliments the spices. The yummy coconut and rum notes are the reason why I re-apply. Very unique.

Overall, I love everything, I do love the Honey Tree (but really want the soap now). Items are affordable, samples are generous. Packaging is beautiful.

Already re-ordered the new Summer scents for my second order. Will be trying every scent Haus offers.

Haus Of Gloi are based in Portland, OR in the US. They offer 16 scents (look here for the general catalogue, and also seasonal limited edition fragrances. Scents can be found in bath salts, perfume oils, soap, scrub, new foaming scrubs, and lotion. This company is strictly vegan, if you have any questions about this just send Britton a convo on Etsy.
